Too sticky for multi-head weighing, too wet for dry filling, too dry for piston depositing and too chunky for accurate portioning; up until now peeled and sliced fruit fillings have often been impossible to deposit automatically and accurately.

“Our customers challenged us to solve this problem for them, after exploring the market for an existing solution” said Paul Goddard, Sales and Marketing Director of Sussex based Steck Depositors. And as a specialist manufacturer of depositing equipment, Steck pride themselves on never walking away from a challenge.

The development needed a back to basics approach, the result of which was the launch of a rotary cup depositor, the RCD500. It combines the ability to handle the sticky, wetted fruit chunks with the ability to cut through the chunks to enable accurate portioning with ease.

Not surprisingly, the first production machine was installed on a large triple lane fruit pie line of a major dessert manufacturer, replacing labour intensive hand portioning. And the result is not just an obvious labour saving, but an improvement in portion control clearly demonstrable through statistical analysis, with a payback on saved labour and product in less than a year.

“This project has been a great success for the customer and ourselves” comments Mike Wilkinson, Managing Director. He continued “The development encompassed not just the mechanical aspects of the new machine, but a whole new control methodology, and we are sure that this type of machine will find applications on some other traditionally difficult to handle products”.

The RCD500 is a modular design, right down to individual lane control electronics, which means that single or multi-lane machines can be configured quickly and precisely to match existing pie lines.
